Keenan Calls for National Ban on Surrogacy for Single Men and Same-Sex Couples
Gilbert, AZ — Daniel Keenan, the leading conservative candidate in the Republican
primary for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, has made the following statement:
On my first day in office, I will introduce legislation to create an immediate and
comprehensive national ban on surrogacy arrangements involving single men
and same-sex couples.Nations from France to Italy to Ukraine to Russia to India to China to Japan have
all outlawed ‘buy-a-baby’ surrogacy that robs a child of a mother by design.
We know from studies the critical importance of the connection between a child
and its mother. Decades of child development research confirm the unique and
essential role mothers play in emotional security, early bonding, and long-term
well-being, and these roles that cannot be substituted by two fathers or a single
male parent.I’m a married father of three children, and I witness every day the irreplaceable
role my wife has in our children’s lives. It is gravely wrong to allow a system that
intentionally denies that relationship.
These arrangements also exploit women. Surrogates are often placed in
high-risk medical situations, with their bodies and reproductive capacities treated
as commodities for hire.Under this ban, surrogacy would be limited to medically necessary cases for
married, heterosexual couples. It’s time for the United States to catch up with the rest of the world and ban
‘buy-a-baby’ surrogacy for single men and same-sex couples, and I’ll lead the
fight to make that happen.
